Principles and guidelines

DONARE is a humanitarian information platform created to empower people to help during crises worldwide. Unlike a charity or donation platform, DONARE does not collect funds directly. Instead, it acts as a guide based on clarity, conscience, and curation, connecting people with reliable information and trustworthy relief organizations. DONARE’s principles and guidelines reflect its unique mission as a non-profit, volunteer-driven platform.

Introduction

While DONARE does not deliver aid directly or act as an aid agency, its work is aligned with the four core humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, independence, and impartiality through educating the public, promoting responsible giving, and helping channel support to humanitarian organizations that put these principles into action on the ground.

Formalized by the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and enshrined in two United Nations General Assembly resolutions, the core humanitarian principles form the foundation of international humanitarian work, underpinning the efforts of United Nations agencies and reputable humanitarian non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

In a world where crises can feel overwhelming, DONARE provides a trusted starting point for those who want to help but don’t know where to begin. DONARE was founded to highlight crises, raise awareness of human suffering, and guide people toward meaningful ways to help — donations, advocacy, or volunteering — aimed at alleviating suffering and protecting lives.

By adhering to strong principles and guidelines such as independence, transparency, credible sourcing, impartiality, and responsible giving, DONARE empowers individuals to take informed action — whether that means donating to a trusted NGO or other humanitarian aid agency, raising awareness, or volunteering time and skills.

Humanity

DONARE’s foremost principle is humanity. Human suffering must be addressed wherever it is found. The purpose of humanitarian action is to protect life and health, while ensuring respect for human dignity.

The principle of humanity requires DONARE to prioritize information – where available – on the most urgent and neglected needs of communities affected by humanitarian crises, and to ensure that these needs can be addressed by the actions of humanitarian organizations and governments around the world.

Humanity also requires that aid reach the most vulnerable populations effectively and in an ethical manner. This principle is particularly critical for children, women, and men who cannot fend for themselves and need humanitarian assistance when their governments are incapable, failing, or unwilling to provide relief.

Impartiality

Impartiality is one of DONARE’s core principles. The platform does not advocate for any specific political or religious agenda. Instead, its focus is solely on providing accurate, balanced information about humanitarian emergencies — whether caused by conflict, displacement, or natural disasters.

DONARE primarily addresses human-made crises triggered by war, conflict, persecution, and human rights violations, while also covering humanitarian emergencies caused by climate change or extreme weather events.

DONARE's commitment is based on its expertise and on the needs of those affected, with priority given to the most urgent cases, without discrimination on the basis of nationality, race, ethnicity, gender, religious beliefs, class, or political opinion. It does not discriminate against any such groups.

The platform highlights crises on humanitarian grounds — covering conflicts, disasters, and displacements regardless of where they occur or who is affected. It directs people to reputable organizations that help populations based on need, not affiliation. Through its background briefings, crisis profiles, news reports, and news aggregation, DONARE aims to help users understand complex situations without bias, hidden agendas, or sensationalism.

Neglected information

DONARE is not just another website or news outlet reporting on global issues. The goal of the information platform is to cover important developments that affect the most vulnerable people across the globe, regardless of where they live.

At DONARE, you will find the most relevant contextual information on issues that are rarely or never covered by national and international media outlets, whether private or public owned.

Unlike popular and influential global news sources, whose reporting is heavily influenced by established power structures, economic agendas, and perceived audience interests, amid poor editorial standards and guidelines, DONARE covers emergencies that put large populations at life-threatening risk.

Independence

As a non-profit, volunteer-run platform, DONARE is not linked to governments, corporations, or armed groups and does not raise money for its own benefit. Its sole purpose is to provide guidance to help people make informed choices about supporting humanitarian relief, advocating for policy change, and finding solutions to resolve and prevent crises.

According to the core principle of independence, humanitarian action must be autonomous from the political, economic, military, or other objectives of any actor in areas where humanitarian action is implemented.

DONARE's efforts are guided by the humanitarian imperative to save lives, alleviate suffering and uphold human dignity, allowing for unbiased and principled interventions. By maintaining independence from political, economic, or military objectives or agendas, DONARE ensures that its work is solely guided by the humanitarian imperative.

Neutrality

According to the core principle of neutrality, humanitarian actors must not take sides in hostilities or become involved in political, racial, religious, or ideological controversies. DONARE does not advocate for any government, armed group, or political faction. Its content is neutral and fact-based, avoiding bias or the promotion of partisan positions. DONARE's goal is to inform people so they can help, not to take sides.

Transparency

Transparency is a key value. DONARE does not provide funds, does not accept donations for humanitarian causes and makes it clear that it is not a fundraising organization. By clearly stating its role as an information portal, DONARE builds trust and avoids conflicts of interest. In addition, the platform informs the public about its guidelines and principles, making its mission, core values, and objectives clear.

Well-researched and credible sourced

DONARE relies on thorough research and on respected humanitarian sources, including United Nations agencies, international NGOs, national and local NGOs, humanitarian professionals and think tanks.

By curating news and data from established organizations and entities, the platform helps ensure that the information it shares is credible, relevant, and up to date. As one of several authoritative sources on global humanitarian affairs, DONARE provides the general public and experts with a wide range of information.

Free and openly accessible

DONARE is completely free to use, free of commercial advertisements and requires no registration. Its resources are openly accessible to the general public, journalists, humanitarian workers, researchers, politicians and other policymakers. The site also includes professional resources for deeper research into humanitarian issues.

Non-profit and volunteer-driven

DONARE is run by volunteers and does not operate for profit. This ensures that its mission remains focused on awareness, impact, and education, rather than revenue generation. The platform does not collect user information for fundraising purposes. DONARE stands out as a principled resource, helping people who want to help those affected by humanitarian crises but are uncertain of where to focus their efforts.

Empowerment through knowledge

One of DONARE's guiding principles is that informed people can make better decisions about how to help. The platform provides background resources on ongoing humanitarian crises, lists aid organizations, and offers practical tips on ways to contribute, such as donations, advocacy for policy change, fundraising, or volunteering.

As an information portal, DONARE connects individuals with opportunities to help in humanitarian crises worldwide. By raising awareness of crises and providing straightforward information, the platform enables more people to help save lives and reduce human suffering.

DONARE offers an overview of efficient ways to contribute through donations that directly support relief organizations working on the front lines that provide life-saving assistance, including food, clean water, medicine, and shelter, to those in urgent need.

Encouraging responsible giving

DONARE promotes responsible giving by highlighting trusted, vetted organizations. It provides users with practical advice on how to check an organization’s credentials and impact before donating. By connecting visitors with established humanitarian aid organizations, DONARE helps minimize the risk of fraud or misuse of funds

Standing by the world's most vulnerable

DONARE’s mission is to stand by the most vulnerable people by providing crucial background information on humanitarian work, aid organizations, and ongoing emergencies. By informing and engaging the public, DONARE fosters a more informed and responsive global community in the face of unprecedented humanitarian challenges.
