Refugees and IDPs

The number of forcibly displaced people continues to rise. As of December 2024, over 123 million people worldwide had been forcibly displaced due to persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations, and events that had seriously disrupted public order. By the end of last year, a record 73.5 million people had been uprooted from their homes by conflict and violence and remained displaced within their own countries as internally displaced persons (IDPs). An additional 51.1 million people were refugees, asylum seekers, or other people in need of international protection.

Internally displaced persons (IDPs) are individuals who have fled violence or natural or human-made disasters but have not crossed an internationally recognized border. They remain within their own country. Conflict and violence have pushed the global IDP population to a record high of 83.4 million by the end of 2024. Of this total, 9.8 million were displaced by disasters, in addition to the 73.5 million displaced by armed conflict and violence.

Refugees are individuals who have crossed an international border. The vast majority of refugees — 67 percent — are hosted by neighboring countries, with more than 70 percent living in low- and middle-income countries. Children make up 29 percent of the world's population but represent 40 percent of all forcibly displaced people.

One way you can help is by supporting international intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that focus on helping refugees and internally displaced persons.

DONARE has selected seven such humanitarian organizations: the UN Refugee Agency, the International Organization for Migration, the Norwegian Refugee Council, the International Rescue Committee, the Danish Refugee Council, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is a United Nations agency mandated to assist and protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people.  The organization is known by its short name, the UN Refugee Agency. UNHCR was established on December 14, 1950, by the United Nations General Assembly to provide assistance to refugees resulting from World War II. On January 1, 1951, UNHCR began its work. Each year, the UN Refugee Agency helps millions of refugees and displaced persons worldwide.  Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the UN agency maintains offices in 134 countries.
