Myanmar Earthquake 2025

On March 28, 2025, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Myanmar, causing widespread destruction and reducing homes, hospitals, schools, and vital infrastructure to rubble in areas inhabited by more than 17 million people. It was the strongest earthquake in Myanmar for over a century and one of the deadliest in recent history. The main quake was followed by a powerful magnitude 6.2 aftershock, which further compounded the devastation. These devastating earthquakes killed more than 3,800 people, injured more than 5,000 and left 6.3 million people, including nearly 2 million children, in critical need of humanitarian assistance in the worst-affected areas.

This natural disaster has exacerbated Myanmar’s existing humanitarian crisis, bringing the total number of people in need of aid across the country to nearly 22 million. An estimated 3.6 million people remain displaced internally. Five months later, many communities still lack adequate shelter, and reconstruction efforts have stalled due to ongoing conflict, political instability and critical shortages of resources. Although humanitarian agencies have reached approximately 1.3 million people, their response has fallen short in terms of depth, consistency and quality, primarily due to severe underfunding. Funding shortfalls have forced cutbacks across all sectors, leaving countless vulnerable people without reliable access to food, healthcare, clean water or sanitation.

Urgent needs remain unmet. Affected communities require shelter, medical supplies, food, clean water and sanitation services.
