After months of hostilities, many families across Lebanon are returning to find their homes damaged and their access to healthcare and other essential services disrupted. Many have also lost their sources of income. For others, continued insecurity and limited access to basic services make returning impossible. Meanwhile, Israeli attacks continue to cause destruction and damage civilian infrastructure in the south.

Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, delivered a sobering message to the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva on Monday. He described the current global situation as an "age of extremes," characterized by intensifying warfare, "painful polarization," climate instability, and the swift and often unregulated growth of artificial intelligence.

While most people displaced by months of airstrikes and insecurity in Lebanon have returned to their areas of origin, many are facing damaged homes, widespread destruction, and a lack of essential services, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR). On Tuesday, UNHCR warned that the displacement and humanitarian crisis in Lebanon is far from over.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that, despite a reduction in hostilities, the humanitarian situation in Lebanon remains fragile. Ongoing military activity continues to endanger civilians, impede the safe return of displaced people, and prolong humanitarian needs. Israeli military airstrikes, demolitions and localized military operations in the south and Nabatieh governorates are still being reported.

The United Nations reports that Israeli military forces continue to kill civilians, including children, with impunity and a total lack of accountability in both the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, despite active ceasefire agreements. Persistent Israeli military attacks have repeatedly violated the eight-month-old truce in the Gaza Strip and breached the newly announced ceasefire covering Lebanon and Iran.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) warned Wednesday that acute food insecurity will worsen for millions in 13 countries deemed "hunger hotspots" between June and November 2026. The latest early warning report identifies Sudan, South Sudan, Yemen, and Gaza as the world's most critical hunger hotspots in terms of hunger severity and magnitude.

As representatives of Iran and the United States reportedly prepared to sign a new peace agreement by the end of the week, the United Nations stressed the urgent need on Monday to open an aid corridor through the choked-off Strait of Hormuz to prevent a global hunger crisis that could lead to an additional 45 million people facing extreme hunger.

A new report released on Thursday by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reveals that, despite remaining alarmingly high, global forced displacement has decreased for the first time in a decade. At the end of 2025, one in every 70 people—or 1.4 percent of the world’s population—were forcibly displaced due to conflict, violence, human rights violations, or events that seriously disturbed public order.

The United Nations in Lebanon issued an appeal on Friday for an additional US$331.5 million to provide assistance to 1.4 million people from June through August. Meanwhile, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reports that its peacekeepers have not detected any projectiles fired from north to south or airstrikes in their area of operations since midnight.

This figure represents approximately one-third of the people the humanitarian organization assisted last year.

Sources in Iran report steadily rising numbers of fatalities from Israeli attacks. More than 450 people have reportedly been killed in the country, including dozens of women and children, and more than 1,400 people have reportedly been injured in Israeli airstrikes and missile attacks that began early Friday. With the support of the Lebanese Hezbollah movement, Israel and Lebanon have signed a ceasefire agreement after more than 13 months of conflict. Under the agreement, Hezbollah troops will move north of the Litani River and Israeli troops will withdraw from southern Lebanon. The Israeli cabinet voted on Tuesday to approve the ceasefire agreement, which came into effect at 4am local time on Wednesday.

Israel's all-out war and blockade have devastated Gaza, displaced 1.9 million people who have been repeatedly forced into ever smaller areas, and cut off access to desperately needed food, water and medicine. Meanwhile, another humanitarian disaster looms in the region as Israeli security forces escalate their war against Lebanon.

More than one million people across Lebanon have been displaced by ongoing and deadly Israeli airstrikes across the country, with more than 1,000 killed in the past two weeks, raising fears of an imminent full-scale invasion. Acute food insecurity is set to increase in scale and severity in 18 hunger hotspots, a new United Nations early warning report said on Wednesday. The report highlights the urgent need for humanitarian assistance to prevent famine in Gaza and Sudan, and further deterioration of the devastating hunger crises in Haiti, Mali and South Sudan. It also warns of the lingering effects of El Niño and the looming threat of La Niña, bringing more climate extremes that could disrupt livelihoods.

International donor funding to alleviate hunger in the world's neediest countries plummeted in 2023, despite exacerbating global food insecurity reaching record highs, aid agencies warn. Humanitarian appeals for the 17 countries bearing the brunt of food insecurity suffered a staggering funding gap of 65 percent last year, up 23 percent from 2022, according to an analysis released this week by the humanitarian organization Action Against Hunger.
